why strategy is an argument

A good strategy explains. A good strategist persuades.

The word ‘argument’ has two meanings and two uses.

1 An argument explains something. It is a coherent description about the nature of a situation or proposal. It threads together commercial logic, and human insight. It may also suggest what to do about that situation.

2 An argument persuades somebody. You use it to reframe or challenge their assumptions and make the case for change. It is a leadership task.

It makes it clear

Good strategy and strategists use both.

(Of course, there’s also a third meaning. An argument is also a good ding dong between different interests. Let them happen. As the great Scottish philosopher David Hume said, truth springs from arguments between friends. And as the mighty Peter Drucker said:

“If you have quick consensus on an important matter, do not make the decision. Acclamation means nobody has done the homework”.
